Military Children: Resilient and Adaptable

Resilient and adaptable are two words that describe children with parents in the military. April begins the Month of the Military Child. The tradition was established by former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger to highlight the role military children play within the Armed Forces community. It is not an easy role as they face moving every few years and having parents away for long periods of time on deployments. It is a life filled with constant change, adjustment, and anxiety. However, most military children are able to adapt and become mindful to the environment around them.
Two studies, "The Long War and Parental Combat Deployment: Effects on Military Children and At-Home Spouses" and "Views from the Homefront,"showed that two thirds of children in military families are coping well and that families with good communication between parents and children handle the stress of military life better.  A link has been found to the resilience of military children and their parents’ emotional well-being.  This information is useful for the one third of military children that are struggling to cope.  It means with help in building communication and emotional-coping skills, they too can thrive.
This month Pamper Your Mind's blog will focus on honoring our nation’s youngest heroes, the “military brats”stationed throughout the world!
