Happy National
Adoption Month!
The counselors
at PYM are excited to celebrate National Adoption Month! This is a time to celebrate the many families
who have been united by adoption and the thousands more who are expected to be
united this month.
Before there was National Adoption
Month, there was Adoption Week in Massachusetts, which was started in 1976 by
Governor Michael Dukakis. That same year, President Gerald Ford, announced that
adoption week would be celebrated nationally.
In 1984 President Ronald Reagan
proclaimed a “National Adoption Week” and nine years later, in 1995, President
Bill Clinton, who was adopted himself, declared November as National Adoption
Month.
Within this month is National Adoption
Day which is held the Saturday before Thanksgiving. On November 23, 2013,
courthouses across the United States will participate is finalizing the
adoption of thousands of children who will go home to a loving and supportive
family they deserve.
PYM would like to use this opportunity
to provide a month full of resources related to emotional well-being for
adopted families and for those considering adoption. Adopted families are a triad including birth
parents, adoptees, and adoptive parents.
It is important to understand, nurture, build, and maintain the mental
and emotional health of all individual’s in the adopted triad for an optimal
adoption experience.
There are many myths and
misunderstandings about adoptions within our society. This can leave individuals that are a part of
an adopted family left feeling isolated with a lack of necessary support. If you know of someone whose life has been
impacted by adoption or who is currently going through the process of adoption,
we encourage you to share this site with them to offer comfort, support, and
inspiration.
